Are CBD Pet Products Legal?
With our CBD pet products being derived from cannabis, the legality of them are frequently called into question. Ever-changing laws surrounding hemp and marijuana doesn’t really help, causing more confusion than curing it. Many just assume everything coming from cannabis, which includes CBD, is illegal. Let’s jump in and answer the question: are CBD pet products legal?
Hemp Versus Marijuana
Legality of hemp and marijuana are both determined by the amount of THC found in the plant itself. THC is the compound responsible for creating the high that marijuana is known for. The legal amount of THC is 0.3%, anything over that is considered marijuana, and is illegal. This was set in the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill, which defined “industrial hemp” as a byproduct of the cannabis plant, used for industrial purposes, and has a THC content less than 0.3%. It is this bill that makes CBD derived from industrial hemp legal in the United States.
One caveat is that all hemp must be properly sourced, containing less than 0.3% THC.
If these guidelines are followed, CBD is legal in the United States.
What About My Vet?
Veterinarians at this time are not able to recommend CBD products for your pets. Due to the lack of scientific research and the general gray area that surrounds everything regarding CBD, most vets won’t ever bring up anything regarding this themselves. The American Veterinary Medical Association issued the following statement: “Veterinarians making treatment decisions must use sound clinical judgment and current medical information, and must be in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations”.
If you do choose to use our products for your pet, be sure to let your vet know, as it can prevent future misunderstandings between both parties. CBD will have an effect on your pet, keeping your vet out of the loop when it comes to anything regarding their health is not a good idea.
CBD Pet Products
We recommend that you do not give your pet any CBD products which are not specifically made for them. As great as CBD can be for humans, the same won’t apply to your pets if you do not follow serving sizes tailored for your furry companion. Correct serving sizes are not the only reason to not give your pet CBD products for humans, such as edibles, as this can lead to digestive issues for both cats and dogs.
